Iraq is likely to post one of the biggest annual output jumps in its history as BP, Shell and other companies tap into its southern oil fields, which are largely untouched by the unrest. Many in the industry expect a significant increase in production from the country that holds the world's fifth-biggest oil reserves and the thirteenth largest gas reserves in the world. Proven reserves are currently found in 79 fields (70 oil and 9 gas), of which only 23 are producing, additionally the “probable” reserves are estimated to be in the order of 214 Billion barrels of oil.
With current proven gas reserves of around 128 TCF of which 92 TCF is associated gas and 36 are non-associated and “probable” gas reserves in the order of 325 TCF 164 associated and 161 non-associated, the future looks very promising indeed.

The infrastructure
Since 2009, the ministry of oil in Iraq has awarded contracts to many international oil companies for some of Iraq's largest oil fields and more recently Iraq has commenced an ambitious development program to invest in its oil fields and to increase its oil production. Iraq has quite a sophisticated and extensive pipeline network, which enables the crude oil and raw gas to feed refineries and gas processing plants. This in turn allows us to supply internal consumers and to export to neighboring countries. However in order to handle the anticipated increase in oil and gas production rates, much of the existing infrastructure will have to be reconditioned and some huge new structures will have to be built. Iraq has ambitious investment plans for its energy sector which are supported by an increasing number of international energy companies. Working with local communities |
International oil companies are not only building strong relationships with the ministry of oil in Iraq but are also looking to the future and developing good relationships with local businesses and communities.
They continue to provide sustainable benefits to local people, particularly through workforce and supplier development opportunities such as comprehensive workforce training programs and by continuing to work closely with local sub-contractors to develop Iraqi supplier capabilities.

Local supply chains
We believe that it is in all of the companies best interests to reduce their supply chain costs by using local companies and from the local supplier’s perspective, it gives them the opportunity to develop their product portfolio and local workforce to meet the growing needs.
For the country the benefits will be the development of capacity and the creation of jobs and commercial opportunities that were just not there before. So we urge you to think ahead, look to see what and where the market developments are and to take the opportunities that present themselves.
