Can Vitamins Protect You from COVID-19?
It is important to understand that NO supplement will cure or prevent a disease, however, it has been proven that Vitamin supplements CAN positively affect your immune health in several ways.
Vitamin C
In an article published in the Chinese Journal of Infection Diseases, the Shanghai Medical Association endorsed the use of high dose vitamin C as a treatment for hospitalized people with COVID-19(Source). There’s also some evidence from animal research and case studies in humans that high dose or IV vitamin C can reduce lung inflammation in severe respiratory illnesses caused by H1N1 (“swine flu”) or other viruses (Source, Source, Source).
Vitamin C’s antioxidant activity can decrease inflammation, which may help improve your immune function, it also keeps your skin healthy by boosting collagen production, helping the skin serve as a functional barrier to keep harmful compounds from entering your body. Vitamin C in the skin can also promote wound healing . The vitamin boosts the activity of phagocytes, immune cells that can “swallow” harmful bacteria and other particles. In addition, it promotes the growth and spread of lymphocytes, a type of immune cell that increases your circulating antibodies, proteins that can attack foreign or harmful substances in your blood. Seriously sick corona virus patients in New York’s largest hospital system,Northwell Health facilities are being given massive doses of vitamin C. On Long Island, Their intensive-care patients with the corona virus received 1,500 milligrams of intravenous vitamin C.
“The patients who received vitamin C did significantly better than those who did not get vitamin C” Dr. Andrew G. Weber, a pulmonologist and critical-care specialist at Northwell Health facilities said.
Vitamin C levels in corona virus patients drop dramatically when they suffer sepsis, an inflammatory response that occurs when their bodies overreact to the infection. so it makes all the sense in the world to try and maintain this level of vitamin C”
Vitamin D
What about vitamin D and Covid in particular? A recent study in Chicago concluded that its result argues strongly for a role of vitamin D deficiency in COVID-19 risk and for expanded population-level vitamin D treatment and testing and assessment of the effects of those interventions (Source)
WHO declared SARS-Cov–2 a global pandemic, little is known about the potential protective factors but Vitamin D deficiency has long been known to coincide with a greater frequency or severity of upper-respiratory tract infections, or colds. That this is a causal effect is supported by some studies showing that vitamin D supplements do reduce the risk of such infections.
A joint study published by researchers from the University of East Anglia & Anglia Ruskin University found significant relationships between vitamin D levels and the number COVID–19 cases and especially the mortality caused by this infection. The most vulnerable group of population for COVID–19 is also the one that has the most deficit in Vitamin D. Vitamin D has already been shown to protect against acute respiratory infections and it was shown to be safe. They concluded the study by stating: We believe that we can advise Vitamin D supplementation to protect against COVID–19. infection. Known as the sunshine vitamin because it’s made in our skin in response to sunlight, Vitamin D plays a key role in keeping us in good health, something that's incredibly important as the country faces the corona virus pandemic. Not only does this important vitamin support our immune system so we can fight off viruses more easily, it is also important for maintaining healthy bones, and has a role in preventing breast and bowel cancer, Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, arthritis and dementia.
